Piggery

 Development of the piggery

In February 2024, Kennedy Tafara Chinyere and local friends built a pig sty for the two pigs that were housed near to the Trees of Hope Nursery.  This was large enough to support the first developments of the piggery.  In July 7 piglets were born they require feeding with specialist food  – growers starter meals, weaner feeds, and lactating meals.  Workers at the Tree Nursery have to go to Domboshava to collect t bags of pig feeds, growers sow meal, and lactating and weaners’ meal. This is a heavy load to carry on the bus.

Wellington Chinyere has been seeking advice and training bout pig farming from the Agriculture and Rural Extension  Office (AREX Officer).   Further support has come from a local pig farmer who has supported  Wellington with the notching (cutting of the teeth when the pigs are young)  and injecting them with infra B30 to protect them from infections.   Wellington reports that when the piglets reach a certain age they need to be weaned from their mother.   Currently a pig sty at Noel’s place is being used to house the sow.

Two pigs were slaughtered at Christmas and many families who support the Trees of Hope project ate pork on Christmas Day. They were very happy.
